Cerium doped Lutetium Aluminum Garnet or LuAG(Ce) scintillation crystal is a relatively dense and fast scintillation material. Its density of 6.73 g/cm3 is about 94% of the density of BGO (7.13 g/cm3). And its decay time is much faster (70 ns) than that of BGO (300 ns). These good properties make it fit for time-dependent and coincidence-scintillating detection. The wavelength of scintillation emission for LuAG(Ce) is about 535 nm, ideal for Photo Diode (PD) and avalanche diode readout. The LuAG(Ce) crystal material is mechanically and chemically stable and can be machined into various shapes and dimensions, including prisms, spheres, and ultra-thin plates/sheets. Like Ce: YAG, Ce: LuAG could be used for imaging screens, but compared with the former, Ce: LuAG has higher densities, which makes its screens thinner and higher in spatial resolution.
Shanghai North Optics offers LuAGCe) scintillation crystals and LuAG(Ce) thin screens are widely used in Position Emission Tomography (PET) Scanners, high energy gamma and charged particle detection, and high spatial resolution imaging screens for gamma, X, beta, and UV rays detection.
